About This Course

This course aims to delve into the nature of teaching and learning as well as the role of technology in designing meaningful and authentic teaching and learning experiences in schools and the schooling system. The course will draw upon contemporary concepts, models and standards in the area of teaching and learning with technology. Applications which have demonstrated student-centred use of technology, improved understanding of subjects, and enabled higher-order thinking/critical skills and other 21st-century skills will be explored.

The course will also discuss how teachers can incorporate technology in the classroom, integrate it with the curriculum and make learning connected and authentic for students. It will touch upon various types of teaching and learning settings which utilise technology, such as blended, distance or virtual formats. It will explore the role and beliefs of teachers in technology-enabled learning through the framework of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) (Kohler & Mishra, 2006) and provide an overview of exemplary technology-enabled methods for sustaining continuous professional development. International and national cases from the literature on programmes on technology integration in K-12 and higher education will be used to substantiate exemplary use and challenges of technology integration.

Course Objectives

  • Deepen understanding and value of the role of technology for inculcating 21st century skills in learners and teachers.
  • Explore and assess different technology applications for meaningful learning.
  • Understand the use and technology enabled pedagogies in blended and virtual/online settings.
  • Explore technology enabled experiences for continued professional development and sustain teachers’ community of practice.

Dr. Amina Charania

Programme Lead MA in Education & Technology, Associate Professor, CETE, TISS

Dr. Amina Charania is an Associate Professor at Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). In the year 2010, she earned her doctoral degree at Iowa State University, USA, specializing in curriculum and instructional technology. She leads research, field action and teacher professional development programmes focusing on Constructivist teaching and learning with technology at scale. These interventions have brought national and international accolades. Over the years, she has published and presented her research and practice in some of the leading journals internationally. Her research has provided evidence based frameworks and policy guidelines for teachers’ agency, pedagogical integration of technologies, and learners as producers concept for adolescents in government schools across multiple geographies. She has also served as a member of the Committee for Mentoring Mission, National Education Policy, anchored by NCTE 2021-22.
