About This Course

O-01 Reimagining Teacher Education-1 is the first of a two course set. Teacher educators have the crucial task of both preparing teachers and implementing policies at the field level. The education sector being complex and dynamic requires teacher educators to keep abreast of the current discourses on education. Also the current curricular and policy demands, expectations and requirements of teacher education means teacher educators have to understand the major aspects of the emerging scholarship on teacher education. This course is expected to disseminate knowledge and practice of teaching about teaching and learning about teaching.

This course is designed keeping in mind experienced professionals and practitioner teacher educators. Such individuals will be aware of field realities and issues and problems related to teacher education. This course is meant for teacher educators to update their knowledge and skills-base to be effective and motivating teacher educators. Teacher education will be studied as a continuum and will include pre-service and in-service teacher education.

Course Objectives

  • Engage in current discourses in teacher education.
  • Re-imagine pedagogical roles of a teacher and teacher educator.
  • Develop teacher capacities for advancing social justice.
  • Reflect on models of teacher education followed in India.

Who can join the course?

  • Must be a teacher educator.
  • Has paid the fees for the course or the programme.

Requirements

Teacher Educator will need to have access to computing devices with connectivity for the entire duration of the programme.

  1. A smart phone with internet to access the course and participate in online communities of practice.
  2. A computer with internet access to complete and upload assignments.

Gomathi Jatin

Indira Vijaysimha

Indira Vijaysimha was a professor at School of Education, Azim Premji University. She has worked as a member of the Academics and Pedagogy group of Azim Premji Foundation where she headed the Teacher Preparation unit. Her work at the foundation was in the area of curriculum development and implementation of elementary teacher education programs in two states - Chattisgarh and Uttarakhand. In addition to this, Indira spear headed a two year quality improvement program in collaboration with a B. Ed college. Prior to joining the Foundation, she was a faculty member for the M.A. El. Ed program at TISS, where she developed and taught a course on Teacher Professional Development. Indira completed her doctoral studies at National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore, where she undertook ethnographic research on the work of science teachers in different types of schools. She was associated as a consultant with the District Quality Education Programme in Chamarajnagar, Karnataka.

Indira is the founder of Poorna Learning Centre in Bangalore, an alternative school which emerged out of Indira’s experiences from home-schooling her own children and from her reflections as a teacher and teacher educator. Poorna Learning Centre promotes inclusive and ecologically sustainable education.

Bindu Thirumalai

Bindu Thirumalai

Bindu Thirumalai is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Education Innovation and Action Research (CEIAR), TISS, Mumbai. She is currently the coordinator of the postgraduate certificate programme ‘Reflective Teaching with ICT’ (RTICT) offered in a blended model for teacher’s professional development. She has MPhil and MA degrees in Education from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and a Masters degree in computer applications from Bangalore University. She is currently pursuing her PhD from TISS in the area of “Teachers’ Communities of Practice”.

Bindu has over six years of field experience facilitating in-service teacher programmes operating at scale in government high school contexts. She has recently designed and developed MOOC based courses on ICT and Education, mentoring for TPD and Action Research as a part of the RTICT programme. She teachers Teacher Education, Action Research for the Masters programme as well as a post-graduate certificate programme for teacher educators at TISS. Bindu’s areas of interest are teacher education, ICT and Education and higher education pedagogy.
