About This Course

In the field of education, action research is a process of inquiry by you as a practitioner to improve your teaching and thereby your students’ learning. Areas of focus in action research are around pedagogic strategies, learning environment and knowledge. For example, a school can decide to change the timetable structure, and headteachers can study the impact of such strategic changes. In any classroom-based research, teachers can explore the effect on the learning environment when she/he makes pedagogical changes. For example, if you, as a teacher, start using smart boards to teach your students. While introducing new pedagogical approaches, content or resources, teachers can also study how one’s knowledge has developed or study improvements in students' learning outcomes.

Unit 1 Introduction to Action Research - This unit introduces the learner to the purpose, rationale and scope of action research

Unit 2 Nature of Action Research - In this unit participants will engage with the action research methodology, its nature , principles , action and change and ideas and goals of teacher inquiry.

Unit 3 Process of Action Research - In this unit participants will learn the processes involved in action research and understand the cyclic nature of the action research process.

Unit 4 Action Research & Pedagogies using ICT - This unit introduces the frameworks and methodologies to do action research while integrating ICTs in teaching and learning processes.

Objectives of the course are:

  • To help learners understand action research as a method of systematic inquiry and processes of change that it is embedded in.
  • To facilitate critical reflection on theories, processes and dilemmas that are associated with action research.
  • To enable learners to develop the required skills of planning and conducting action research studies, specifically in the field of education and technology.
  • To apply researched frameworks to do action research while integrating technology/ICTs in teaching and learning processes.
  • Requirements

    Teachers will need to have access to computing devices with connectivity for the entire duration of the programme.

    (1) A smart phone with internet to access the course and participate in online communities of practice.

    (2) A computer with internet access to complete and upload assignments.
