E-04: Designing Learning Experiences for the English Classroom

Introduction

Planning is a very important skill for teachers. A carefully created plan for students can do wonders in the classroom and provide effective learning opportunities for students. Planning lessons and units beforehand gives helps teachers become more organised and confident when they enter the classroom. Given the importance of planning, this course focuses on designing learning experiences, lesson plans and assessment activities for students in an English Language classroom. Apart from discussing the basic principles of planning, you will also explore the importance of different language skills and plan activities according to these language skills. The course will introduce best practices, strategies and resources that you can use in your English classroom. You will be able to reflect on your classroom experiences through authentic examples, readings, case studies and thoughtful assignments. The various resources and strategies used in this course can be adapted in any language classroom as well. This course is relevant for English language educators but also beneficial for teachers who teach in English medium and wish sharpen their skills of designing activities, assessments and plans.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, you will be able to
  • Design activities and lesson plans for English language classroom.
  • Design lesson assessment activities in alignment with the planned objectives and teaching-learning activity.
  • Critically reflect upon lesson plan implementation and understand its further implications on planning

The learner must have
  • Completed graduation.
  • Access to teach 5-10 students

I have served as Visiting Faculty in the English department at Stella Maris College, Chennai and at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. A doctoral graduate in Literature from IIT Bombay, I have nearly six years’ experience in teaching English language and literature to students of engineering, arts and the sciences. I enjoy researching in art and aesthetic theories, the postmodernist historical novel, culture and representation studies and humanities education. In CEIAR, I have been a part of the design and development of the CLIx student modules. I also research language teaching and learning practices and student autonomy in the CLIx project.
